The Adventures of Odysseus
These eighteen sculptures illustrate characters from the story that Odysseus tells about his adventures on his way home from the war. Odysseus tells this story at a banquet in his honor after washes up on the shores of a friendly land.
The parts of the sculptures share classic proportions. The ratio of the long length to the short length is phi- the golden section or 1.618…, a number found in nature. This proportion abounds in the five pointed star, so fragments of it can be found in each of the sculptures. They also share the same form- five identical tetrahedrons serially connected, forming a helix.
The titles were inspired by the resulting forms. Most were conceived without bases- as helixes in space. Each sculpture tells a part of the grand adventure. You may end up wondering where the sculpture of hero of the story is. You, the viewer, are Odysseus.
